It's been extraordinarily dry.Looking at weather models I think we will start to see more mushrooms by about October 17th-19th when there will be a big temperature spike after a period of heavy rain over VI.
Thanks Miles, yes, late is good. I'm hearing reports of lots of great finds over the last week or two, so I'm thinking you are right, end of October will be great. I've taken time off work for it!!! Admirable Boletes and other Boletes, Chantrerelles, and Jessica found a Big Laughing Jim! So the season is starting in a big way now!
I've been checking around town. The ground is very wet for the first 3/4" but underneath the soil is only slightly damp. We will need at least until the 15th before we start seeing the kind of mushrooms we want.
Yes, I have been checking my "go to" spots around Nanaimo and have found nothing. Even one of the places I love to go to just to stare at the gazillions of Rosy Russalas is just a vast expanse of empty moss. The mushrooms I found yesterday up island tended to be in folds and low places that were wetter than others, suggesting to me that either the ground is not wet enough in the rest of the forest yet, or the mycelium have died off in the dry areas. Can this happen? I guess I need to do some research...
I have just checked:1. Witchcraft Lake2. The Abyss3. Mt Benson via Witchcraft4. VIU WoodlotI have found a few boletes so far this year under the cedars at the VIU Woodlot parking area. All slippery jacks. My suggestion based on rainfall trends in the weather models would be northwest Vancouver Island. Specifically areas west of Gold River, BC on southwest facing slopes.

Yep, I think that is good advice Miles. Next weekend I'll be heading up island. Apparently there have been bumper crops of Chanterelles in the Duncan area too.
Anyone know about shaggy mane mushrooms we had some in our lawn but got rid of them
Hi Sandi, I unfortunately do not know much about shaggy mane mushrooms. I thought I had some a couple of years ago, only to discover they were probably Alcohol Inky instead. I've seen others that were too far along to really tell. They seem to mature very quickly... Sorry can't be much help.
